ODYSSEY
ODYSSEY

The Odyssey is the first commercial home console in video game history. Released by Magnavox in September 1972, it is capable of displaying three square dots on the screen in monochrome black and white, with differing behavior for the dots depending on the game played, and with no sound capabilities. The Odyssey console came packaged with twelve or ten game cards version, related plastic screen overlays to create visuals and different board game paraphernalia to go along with the games. A peripheral controller -the first video game light gun- was sold separately along with two cards. The system was discontinued in 1975 with 28 games in 11 game cards released and 350,000 units sold, marking the rise of the commercial video game industry along with the start of the first generation of home consoles.
