The Mini Arcade Tabletop version of Donkey Kong is an electronic game produced by Coleco under license from Nintendo, published in 1982 and based on the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong. It is based on vacuum fluorescent display (VFD), a display device once commonly used in consumer electronics, which while offering a simpler and limited version than the original arcade game (and more affordable), is pretty similar to the original thanks to Donkey Kong design which lends itself well to games of this type.
The aim of the game is to save Mario's girlfriend who is taken to the top of a tall building by the ape Donkey Kong. To save her, you must move Mario over the beams and up the stairs, dodging and jumping over deadly barrels to reach the top of the ramps. Once at the top, however, the ape takes his girlfriend even higher and you must then move Mario to make him remove all the rivets from the beams while avoiding dangerous fireballs.
Launched in 1982 as one of the first four titles in Coleco's Mini Arcade Tabletop series, Donkey Kong contributed to the achievement of the approximately three million units sold in a year, which led to the subsequent publication in 1983 of the other three titles in the second series, Ms Pac-Man, Zaxxon and Donkey Kong Junior.
